Mack Air Celebrates 35 years of Airline representation

The Airline division of John Keells Holdings PLC housed in the Mackinnons building in fort; celebrated 35 years of operations on the 10th of February 2015. Comprising of the two companies Mack Air (Pvt) Ltd and Mack Air Services Maldives (Pvt) Ltd; the airline division began operations on the 07th of February 1980.

The Airline division of John Keells Holdings PLC housed in the Mackinnons building in fort; celebrated 35 years of operations on the 10th of February 2015. Comprising of the two companies Mack Air (Pvt) Ltd and Mack Air Services Maldives (Pvt) Ltd; the airline division began operations on the 07th of February 1980 as a provider of General Sales Agency functions for Airlines. The company began with the representation of offline products such as Gulf Air, Zambia Airways, LTU, Air France and Eastern Airlines (US). A milestone in the company’s history was the start of online operations between Bahrain and Colombo by Gulf Air on the 1st of Aug 1984; which made Mack Air a by name within the travel trade. Walkers Air Service (Pvt) Ltd was incorporated on the 25th of June 1996; for handling cargo related products and the American Airlines passenger arm. Mack Air Service Maldives was launched on the 8th of May 2000 for the representation of Sri Lankan Airlines and Mihin Air as PSA partner in the Maldives. Mack Air saw the results of its work bear fruit on 24th March 2004 with Jet Airways beginning online operations between Chennai and Colombo; Colombo was incidentally the first international destination for Jet Airways. The airline within a short time span expanded their operations to the Indian Industrial Capital of Mumbai; bringing the total of flights up to 14 flights a week between India and Colombo.

Having merged the two companies Mack Air and Walkers Air Services on the 18th of February of 2010 for operational purposes; Mack Air at present plays host to numerous global travel related entities such as American Airlines, Air France-KLM, Asiana Airlines, Kenya Airways, Air Mauritius, Garuda Indonesia Airlines, Hong Kong airlines, Gulf Air, APG associates & the global distribution system Worldspan by Travelport.

Over the years Mack Air has seen a stellar cast playing various roles within its employee ranks. Mr. Romesh David the current President of the Transportation sector, Mrs. Roshani Moraes the past Sector Head of Consumer Foods, Mr. Janoda Thoradeniya the current CEO of John Keells Office Automation, Mr. Rohan Siriwardena; ex-General Manager of Mack Air (Pvt) Ltd/ ex-Country Manager – Sri Lankan Airlines (The United States) & Walkers Air Services (Pvt) Ltd, and last but not least Mr. Susantha Ratnayake the Chairman of John Keells Group, have been some of the ‘alumni’ to have taken part in shaping Mack Air in to the entity that it is today. Currently at the helm of the company as its chief executive officer is Mr. Anil Bandara.
